Greetings!

Happy New Year from the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay! A note from incoming Board President Ian Walton.
Ian Walton, Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay Board President

New Year greetings on behalf of the Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay Board of Directors! Thank you so much for being a member! You are what makes it possible for us to bring the finest Celtic music to the Santa Cruz area, as we have enjoyed doing for many years.

We had a great sold out winter holiday show at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz with Irish Christmas in America, where we welcomed a surprising number of non-members and new members. We continue to host a majority of our upcoming shows at the Kuumbwa.
Our new Concert Director Jackie Pierce is also working on several other possibilities for smaller shows (such as John Doyle and Mick McCauley) as house concerts or at the intimate well known venue The Ugly Mug Café in Soquel. Many of you know that we are still trying to find a suitable location for medium-sized shows to replace Michael's on Main, which was shuttered after a kitchen fire gutted portions of the building in September of 2022.

I also want to share with you news of the Society and those who make all these shows possible. After many years of dedicated service from Bob Breheny and Gloria Rosson and the rest of our volunteer Board, I am delighted to be moving into the President role. In addition, we’re excited to welcome two new Board members, Susan Keith and Andy Doerr. Kathy Fieberling (Vice President), Pete Haworth (Treasurer), Peter Schwarz (Secretary), Gloria Rosson, and Lynda Haworth will all continue as Board members. Read more about the Board on the Society website.

We’re hoping that you will all come out and support our impressive lineup of shows in 2024 and the artists who have committed to resuming their international travel to entertain and delight us in the new year.

For the past 30 years and more Jim Malcolm has been the ultimate Scots troubadour, taking the traditional songs of Scotland and his own prize winning compositions to all corners of the UK and around almost every state in the USA. His voice is one of the finest in Scotland, and his mellifluous guitar playing is the perfect accompaniment. Jim was voted Songwriter of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards, and was nominated three times for Scots Singer of the Year. He has 15 solo CDs to his credit, and has appeared on countless others, including three albums with the world-renowned Old Blind Dogs, from his eight years as their frontman.

This year Jim has another trick up his sleeve as his wife Susie joins him on stage. You may have heard her voice singing harmonies on Jim’s CDs, but with their children off to pastures new Susie is now entering stage left. An award-winning traditional singer herself, Susie sings songs from the North East of Scotland and has a penchant for ballads. Their 2017 debut album as a duo, Spring Will Follow On has been widely played across two continents and its successor, The Berries, has been called “a masterclass in Scottish traditional song.” Their third duo CD, Auld Toon Shuffle, was released in the spring of 2022.Together they offer harmonies and humour…tales from the road, the riverside, and from the home front, and are not to be missed.

Weed's Winter Jam Camp

Friday, February 2 — Monday, February 5, 2024
Hastings Natural History Reservation, Carmel Valley
mailings@celticsociety.org

Weeds’ Winter Jam Camp is a fiddle camp for intermediate and advanced players. It will include a combination of jamming, learning tunes by ear, applying stylistic enhancements… and more jamming! What is different about this camp is that the primary focus is not solely on learning repertoire, but on delving deeper into the world of jamming and ensemble playing. We’re going to focus on a combination of traditional music styles — Celtic, Old-Time/Appalachian, Canadian, and Nordic. The camp will be led by instructors John Weed, fiddle; Bill Coulter, guitar and flute; Emma May, fiddle; and Tyler Weed, guitar/tenor banjo/mandolin. While the teachings will focus on fiddle, guitar, tenor banjo, and mandolin, people who play other  instruments (woodwinds, flute, harp, bodhran, bouzouki) compatible with these styles are welcome! Address provided upon ticket purchase.

In 2024, the camp will again be held at UC Berkeley’s ~2,500 acre Hastings Natural History Reservation, which is part of the University of California’s Natural Reserve System. The site offers beautiful views and ample hiking for those wanting to get out and move around. The reserve address is 38601 E. Carmel Valley Road, Carmel Valley, CA 93924. Hastings has been a long-term study site for research on behavioral ecology under the auspices of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, UC Berkeley.
