June 2018 Newsletter
Greetings!

The San Francisco Bay Area is rich with Celtic traditions. Your opportunity to pick up an instrument, learn to dance and sing, listen to a local Celtic music radio show, or enjoy an inspiring concert is just a click or short journey away. For instance, O'Flaherty's Irish Pub hosts a traditional Irish seisiun every Tuesday night in downtown San Jose; and there's Irish dancing on Tuesdays at Lily Mac's in downtown Sunnyvale. Rosie McCann's in downtown Santa Cruz hosts traditional music, as does the Poet & Patriot on 4th Sundays; and there's traditional music on KBCZ 90.1 every Monday night, broadcasting locally from the Santa Cruz Mountains and streaming globally at kbcz.org.

For more information on "what's on" in the local Celtic scene, check out Irish Culture Bay Area (irishculturebayarea.com) and bookmark The Celtic Society of the Monterey Bay (celticsociety.org). You can also explore the fun of a traditional Irish seisiun by joining: www.meetup.com/Santa-Cruz-South-Bay_Irish-Music-Meetup/

John Doyle

"What are they putting in the potable water where John resides that has made him so mind-vaultingly good?" __ Earle Hitchner, The Wall Street Journal and the Irish Echo (formerly)

It's hard to know where to begin when trying to describe John Doyle. Let's start with his amazing guitar and bouzouki work. His innovative chord choices mixed with amazingly deft melody lines are a joy to hear; it's hard to think of anyone else who can come close to John's instrumental talents.

But it doesn't stop there. In recent years, John has blossomed into a singer of songs both traditional and self-penned, all backed by his unique style of accompaniment.

From his early days with Irish supergroup Solas, to his duo work with fiddler Liz Carroll, to his work with Nuala Kennedy and Eamon O'Leary as the Alt, to his collaboration with Scottish fiddler John Mckusker and piper Mike McGoldrick, everything John does has the glitter of genius attached to it.

John has been a rare visitor to our neck of the woods in recent years, so don't miss this opportunity to hear him in the intimate, acoustic setting of a house concert. Whether you're a fan of instrumentals or songs, you won't be disappointed. [More...]

Jeremy Kittel Trio

"Inhabiting the space between classical and acoustic roots, Celtic and bluegrass aesthetics, folk, and jazz."

Previously of the Grammy-winning Turtle Island Quartet, Jeremy Kittel has been a composer-arranger-collaborator for such diverse artists as My Morning Jacket, Yo-Yo Ma & the Silk Road Ensemble, and Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn. He blazes through a Bach violin partita as easily as a Scottish reel, bringing the same intense focus and precision to both. For the last few years the Michigan native, now based in Brooklyn, has been diligently building his own repertoire of music for a wholly original new group.

This Kittel and Co. show features mandolin phenom Josh Pinkham (named “the future of the mandolin” by Mandolin Magazine) and guitarist Quinn Bachand (who's toured with fiddling icons Ashley MacIsaac and Natalie MacMaster).

Kittel & Co.’s highly anticipated new album is set to release in April.

“Kittel’s group, with the mandolinist Joshua Pinkham and guitarist Quinn Bachand, takes the string band tradition to marvellously rarefied levels of collective virtuosity. Playing a repertoire from bluegrass to Bach to a strathspey and reel set… [they] sounded thrillingly spontaneous. ...Taking traditional music forward.” -Times UK  [
